Noise from underneath my tail

It's been happening a lot lately. The humans switched me on the crunchy food and this noise keeps happening behind me, it scares me. It smells weird sometimes too, and I try catching whoever is making it, but if I turn around all I can see is my tail? There is a squirrel behind all this - I can feel it.
